Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, seeks a Software Developer to support NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Observations (OBS).The position is based at the NOAA campus in Silver Spring, MD, but remote work is authorized.
Position Summary:
The qualified individual will provide technical support to the NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Observations, the primary office responsible for the collection of observational data gathered and/or leveraged by NWS. The NWS Office of Observations requires a range of support related to the access, processing and exploitation of environmental satellite data within NWS.
Primary Duties:
- Prototype, adapt, and develop software to enhance satellite data access and exploitation
- Design / plan / reengineer software systems and data handling processes
- Maintain, update, and extend workflow systems for near-real-time space-weather algorithms
- Maintain a complex, database-driven Javascript Web application
- Perform complex software configurations for satellite data access and visualization by end users
Secondary Duties:
- Serve as user liaison with weather forecasters
- Serve as a science liaison with space weather scientists
- Provide user software support
- Perform documentation and coordination
Required Education/Experience/Skills:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or similar degree
- Experience with Python and JavaScript programming
- Ability to perform multiple tasks, some complex
- Ability to interface with science users and other programmers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Linux experience
Desired Experience/Skills:
- SQL and relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL)
- NoSQL databases e.g., ElasticSearch
- Understanding of requirements-driven engineering
- Experience with netCDF-4 and other scientific and meteorological data formats
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills
- Agile System Development Life Cycle
- Experience with NWS, NOAA, weather forecasting, or meteorology a plus
