Position Description Summary:
The College of Professional Studies (CPS) of The George Washington University invites applications from qualified applicants for this open rank, full-time fiscal year faculty position with an administrative appointment as the Director of the Strategic Public Relations Program at the Graduate School of Political Management. This is a twelve-month, non-tenure-track, renewable appointment with an initial appointment period of three years, beginning as early as Fall 2024.

Strategic Public Relations is one of four degree programs in the Graduate School of Political Management, together with Legislative Affairs, Political Management, and a Spanish-language degree in Political Communication and Strategic Governance. The GSPM master's degree in Strategic Public Relations program focuses on the fundamentals of effective, strategic communications, including best practices for writing, media relations, and digital and strategic communications; ethical and fiscally responsible leadership; and working with management, staff, and vendors across diverse sectors to develop and implement effective communications strategies.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Professor of Public Relations and Strategic Public Relations Program Director position includes the following responsibilities:
  • Teaching four courses per academic year
  • Participating in public thought leadership and media opportunities
  • Undertaking research and other scholarship, including sponsoring, supporting, and collaborating with fellow scholars through the CPS Visiting Scholars-Practitioners Program
  • Recruiting and overseeing part-time faculty
  • Advising, mentoring, and engaging/retaining students
  • Contributing to the program's admissions and marketing efforts
  • Collaborating with alumni and internal and external partners to advance the program's mission, including via partnerships with industry experts or other relevant professional organizations (such as the Institute of Public Relations, Arthur W. Page Society, or the Public Relations Society of America), corporate, nonprofit, or government agencies
  • Overseeing and facilitating experiential learning opportunities for students (e.g., capstones, internships, study abroad, residencies)
  • Closely collaborating with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs on curricular and program development, including assessment and compliance (e.g., ADA, Quality Matters), and program evaluation and reporting
  • Participating in the advancement of CPS's mission via service
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have: 1) an advanced degree such as a master's degree, law degree, PhD, or other relevant degree by the date of appointment; 2) research, teaching, and/or leadership experience in the field of communications/public relations; 3) experience in strategic communications in corporate, nonprofit, or government affairs.
Advertised Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
