Primary Responsibilities

HDR is looking for a Principal Economist to join our Transportation Business Group in Washington DC. In the role of Principal Economist, we'll count on you to:

  • Collaborate with transportation leaders to provide strategic economics expertise related to project selection and prioritization, benefit-cost analysis, economic impact analysis, financial analysis, risk analysis, econometrics, regional economics and economic development, socio-economic forecasting, transportation policy, and other related areas
  • Conduct defensible analyses utilizing reliable data and formulate recommendations, policies, or plans to aid in developing solutions to economic, financial, funding, and policy issues
  • Participate as part of larger teams in all phases of the development of a project including planning, construction, operations and maintenance
  • Provide strong leadership in managing projects and tasks, providing ongoing feedback to project team members and develop and mentor junior staff
  • Lead the growth of economic consulting services in different areas including highway, transit, rail, water, energy, and airport projects by leveraging industry experience. Proactively identify business development opportunities within and outside of HDR, partner with HDR colleagues to develop and pursue leads, and assist with developing client capture plans both locally and nationally
  • Conduct research, develop industry leading methods and tools, participate in practice-level strategic planning and strive for external recognition through publications and conference articulations

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Business Administration or closely related field
  • A minimum of 10 years consultant and extensive related experience
  • Proficiency with MS Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Access and Outlook
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong relationship, organizational and follow-up skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference given to local candidates (DC is the required office location)
