What you job will be like:

The Fusion Project team is seeking a motivated technical member to join our team to develop polarized material for fusion experiments. The successful candidate will provide technical/mechanical support for the Spin Polarized Fusion (SPF) project, a multi-lab Department of Energy effort which will help to pave the road towards a viable fusion power reactor. The candidate will also work on associated projects with the Jefferson Lab Target Group and the engineering and technical staffs of Experimental Hall B. The candidate will be responsible for maintenance, repairs, fabrication, and installation of various components including vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, and precision mechanical systems.

In this role you will:

  • Work on all mechanical aspects in the fabrication and installation of an irradiation cryostat used to prepare target materials for fusion and nuclear physics experiments.
  • Become familiar with vacuum systems construction and operation.
  • Work with Jefferson Lab's Accelerator Division to assemble the irradiation beamline.
  • Work with machine tools (milling machine, lathe, drill press, etc.) to fabricate parts from drawings, sketches or verbal instructions.
  • Operate material handling equipment, cranes, forklifts, trucks, etc.
  • Fit and assemble parts for vacuum components and cryostats.
  • Fabrication of moderately complex small to large equipment as requested.

Qualifications we require:

Education

  • High School Diploma

Experience

  • 9 or more years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to do multiple tasks, follow written and verbal instructions and work independently and/or in a team environment.,
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.,
  • Must be knowledgeable in vacuum system and leak checking.,
  • Must be proficient with hand and power tools,
  • Must be skilled on fabrication and machining with general machine shop equipment, such as milling machines, lathe, saws and brake press.,
  • Proficient in operating crane, forklift and work platform

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities we desire:

  • Working knowledge of fabrication and machining
  • Knowledge of cryogenics technology
