Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Lab/Algae Intern with a background in microbiology, ecology, or phycology to join our team. The intern will use our advanced FlowCam technology to report on algae counts and will be involved in both laboratory and field work, collecting, and analyzing algae specimens. This is an excellent opportunity for hands-on experience in aquatic research and environmental monitoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect algae specimens from various field sites.
  • Operate the FlowCam to analyze algae samples and report on algae counts.
  • Identify and categorize different types of algae using microscopy and other analytical techniques.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of field and laboratory observations.
  • Assist in the preparation of final reports summarizing the types and distributions of algae in the study area.
  • Ensure all field and laboratory work adheres to safety and quality standards.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Microbiology, Ecology, Phycology, or a related field.
  • Strong background in microbiology or ecology with specific knowledge of algae preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment and techniques, including microscopy.
  • Familiarity with FlowCam or similar imaging flow cytometry technology is a plus.
  • Ability to conduct field work, which may include physical activities such as hiking and carrying equipment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
